ACC anounces finalists for the 2009 Polyurethane Innovation Awards

25-Sep-2009 - USA

Six finalists for the 2009 Polyurethane Innovation Awards have been announced by the Center for the polyurethanes Industry (CPI) of the American Chemistry Council. CPI’s Polyurethane Innovation Awards are designed to recognize and reward the role that innovation plays in advancing the polyurethanes industry. This year’s Innovation Awards program consists of two categories: Polyurethane chemicals and Finished Products. Conference attendees will vote on October 5 and 6, and winners will be announced October 7, during the closing session of the Polyurethanes 2009 Technical Conference.

“Sustainability and innovation are especially important to the many industries that rely on polyurethane materials to help them solve their most pressing challenges,” said Neeva-Gayle Candelori, director of CPI. “Based on this year’s entries and the hard choices we had to make in selecting our six finalists, I’d say our industry is stronger than ever and heading in some very exciting directions.”

Polyurethane Chemicals Finalists

DuPont was selected for its introduction of Cerenol®, a family of engineered renewably sourced polyetherdiols. Foam Supplies, Inc. was chosen for its development of Ecomate®, a blowing agent for polyurethane foams that can be used in a wide variety of polyurethane foam applications, including appliances, marine flotation, doors, and building panels. The third finalist, Polymate-INRC, elaborates on the advanced technology of nonisocyanate polyurethanes’ production with two-component binders that combine mechanical properties of polyurethanes and chemical resistance of epoxy binders.

Finished Product Finalists

BASF Corporation has been selected as a finalist for its light-stable, aliphatic polyurethane framed skylight for both residential and commercial applications, encapsulated with Colofast® aliphatic RIM polyurethane. Icynene Inc. has increased the marketplace’s reference level for “green” insulation with its spray foam technology, Icynene LD-R-50™, a renewable-based, light density, water-blown spray foam insulation and air barrier material. The third finalist is Fenner Precision® for its design and development of a polyurethane tank tire wheel for the U.S. military’s Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

A panel of five judges representing a cross section of polyurethanes experience and knowledge evaluated and selected the finalists. The judges this year included two journalists – Frank Gupta, PU Magazine, and Liz White, Urethanes Technology – polyurethane consultant Brian Fogg; Billie Faircloth, Director of Research, Kierantimberlake Associates LLP; and Jake Vandevort of CPI.
