Ten years of Glasurit® 90 Line: BASF is Top for Automotive Refinish Paints Too

04-Mar-2002

Münster/Sylt. BASF coatings is making history with eco-efficiency and innovation: In 1992, exactly ten years ago, the company presented the world's first water-borne basecoats for automotive refinishing. Apart from a reduction of the volatile organic compound (VOC) content to as little as one tenth - a sensational achievement at the time -, these refinishing paints, known as Glasurit® 90 Line, also offered the great advantage of easy handling and economical application. In 1999, the ease of handling was improved again. And with some success: Glasurit waterborne basecoats hold a commanding position on the European market. This high-speed development was preliminarily summed up already in 1996 by the 'Allianz Zentrum für Technik' (AZT), as a conclusion drawn from a large-scale study, the "AZT study of water-based coatings." This study states that "refinishing with waterborne coatings is practicable, is highly welcome in the light of ecological requirements and makes good economic sense."

With this eco-efficient paint system, users can easily comply with all VOC regulations currently in force in Europe. To make sure that Glasurit customers will be well-placed to meet future legal requirements just as easily, the company is currently completing its product range in this field: it plans to launch additional VOC-compliant undercoat materials such as primers and surfacers. Glasurit users need not worry about the new requirements they will have to meet by November 1, 2007 in their existing plants and by November 1, 2004 in new plants.

90 Line can be used to repair metallic, special-effect and solid-color finishes, covering the entire range of modern-day car refinishing jobs. Paintwork based on this system is characterized by mechanical, chemical and physical resistance. Furthermore, the mixing bases feature excellent storage stability even at temperatures below zero and allow the use of tinplate cans as well as existing mixing machines. And the paint system can be applied in conventional spray booths. 90 Line is an integral part of the Glasurit RATIO-AQUA System, which comprises all components needed in vehicle refinishing. These components range from products for pretreatment, anti-corrosion protection and fillers to topcoats and clear coats.
