Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI - news) today announced it has recently secured several key patents on innovations that are being incorporated into some of its major product lines that are sold into life sciences, environmental, and industrial applications worldwide. The patents are indicative of the depth and breadth of Varian's expertise in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), chromatography, optical spectroscopy instruments and vacuum technologies.
A total of 20 patents were awarded during the first nine months of fiscal 2001 for inventions that go into several types of systems, ranging from equipment being used by pharmaceutical companies to test and develop new drugs to new techniques used by environmental labs that extract pollutants and pesticides out of air and water samples for analysis by gas chromatography.
``Varian continues to be at the forefront of pioneering innovative ideas that leverage our broad and deep toolset of scientific instruments and vacuum technologies to provide our customers with complete solutions to their pressing challenges,'' said Allen J. Lauer, president and CEO, Varian, Inc. ``By patenting our ideas, we continue to retain the competitive advantage that we have earned over the past fifty years.''
Following is a sampling of Varian's recently awarded patents:
``Stirring Shaft Monitoring Comparator'' is a tool that helps bring drugs to market more quickly by streamlining processes and shortening the amount of time it takes pharmaceutical companies to perform the U.S. FDA and the U.S. Pharmacopeia physical parameter testing on a dissolution tester for active drug tablets and capsules.
``Flow-Through NMR Probe Having a Replaceable NMR Flow Tube,'' is an apparatus that enhances productivity by enabling repetitive sample injections and extending the range of applications for NMR. It is currently being used by pharmaceutical companies and academic research laboratories for creating and analyzing chemical libraries, and screening new drugs for applicable functionality.
The ``Compact Turbomolecular Pump,'' which is integrated into gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers (GC/MS), touts a new rotor design with streamlined axial direction and smaller mechanical bearings. These provide increased levels of reliability and longer service without sacrificing operational capability. The GC/MS instruments that incorporate this pump are used for toxicology and environmental testing, as well as by pharmaceutical companies to formulate and analyze chemical composition.
Since becoming an independent company in April 1999, Varian, Inc. has received more than 40 patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for its inventive ideas.
